THE EFFECT OF RESONANCE

I am always looking for an interesting perspective on anything I come across in my day to day life. I love to take pictures of amazing scenery but also of the smaller details in life like a cigarette being left on top of a fire alarm at the exit of a building. My aim is to capture the emotion, curiosity, provocation and awe of the moment in a way that the person viewing the image can hopefully have close to the same experience even without being there.

In my photo of my nephew licking an ice lolly, I didn't just want a picture of my nephew with an ice lolly. I wanted to really capture that moment his tongue touched the cold surface for the first time as it just slightly sticks to the not yet licked ice. I wanted a picture of him experiencing that feeling of summer with the sun beaming down as his tastebuds absorbed the sweetness of this refreshing treat. I wanted to capture the taste and the feeling of enjoyment all of that brings as it comes together in one moment. When I take a photo like that, at the point that I decide to push the button is when I have experienced the feeling of what I call the effect of resonance.

I took a photography class when I was 16. The teacher looked at the 1st photo I took and said I had a unique eye on the world and she didn't want to teach it out of me. I was encouraged to just experiment with my own ideas and focus on the substance of my work over the technical aspects. Working with tight limitations has helped me develop more imagination and creativity across a lot of areas of my life. The way I take my photo's is not from being taught, it is from feeling the moment and being fully immersed in my observations of the world around me. Those feelings of resonance don't just happen with photos, it happens in anything I create. It's emotion, cognition, physiology and a clear sense of the world all resonating together. When I feel that moment of resonance is when I know I am nearing my most creative levels. What is created is a reflection of resonance. Through R&R I plan to work more on developing our understanding of the psychology of creative processes.  The aim is to eventually help other people get back in touch with their engines of imagination and their ability to experience resonance so they can accomplish creative journeys more consistently.
